Members of the Our Lady Help of Christians Parish Finance Council
I vividly remember the day I moved into Our Lady Help of Christians Parish as my wife Cathy went into premature labour with our second children (twin boys) in February 1984. Due to an interstate work transfer we didn’t engage in parish activities until after we returned and met neighbours whose eldest child was enrolled to attend St John’s School. Not long after that is how we were first introduced to Robyn Miller as we supported the School Fetes and attended mass at St John’s, Northgate. Our last son Thomas was christened there in 1991 by the assistant parish Priest Fr Tom Boland, a history author of some note who resided at Northgate while Fr Peter Gilham lived at Hendra (closer to the races, I suspect). After the St John’s school at Northgate closed in 1995, we remained regular St John’s attendees, with the occasional visit to Hendra during Reverend James Spence’s term. For as long as I can recall the communities of Hendra and Northgate were of one, even if the official paperwork may not have followed until much later.
Upon Father Anthony Mellor’s appointment as Parish Priest, I was re- approached to be on the Parish Finance Council with formation undertaken in December before appointment and attendance at my first Finance Council meeting on 25 Jan 2012. I was elected Chair but have been ably assisted by a small group of fellow parish finance councillors (some of who continue to this day to assist me in my role). Father (now Bishop) Michael encouraged Cathy & I to become Special Ministers of the Eucharist during his term.
On 11 May 2014 I oversaw another ‘changing of the guard’ to our current arrangement upon the appointment of Fr Paul Chackanikunnel, where I look forward to being of assistance to Fr Paul and the OLHC Parish. With the amalgamation of Our Lady Help of Christians and St Cecilia’s parishes, I continue in the role of Chair of the Finance Council of the new Mother of Mercy Parish.
I have been in the Hendra Parish since 1995 and have been involved in Parish Committees and activities during that time which has been rewarding in getting to know many of the parishioners. Since 1975 I have been in the health care industry and am currently working in Local Government managing a team of doctors and allied health professionals in the area of Occupational Health and Rehabilitation where the focus is the wellbeing of ill or injured employees and returning them to work in a safe and timely way.
I am a member of the Parish Finance Council and joined the Hendra Parish when I moved to the suburb in January 2013. I am a partner in a large Chartered Accounting firm and am also a member of the Brisbane Catholic Education Council and the Archdiocesan Catholic Foundation. In additional to my keen interest in education, I also have an interest in disability and have been a Director of the Cerebral Palsy League of Qld for over 20 years.
I have been a parishioner of St. Cecilia’s Hamilton for approx. sixty years. I have been a member of the St Cecilia’s parish council for approx. twenty years and chairman for approx. ten years. I have been attending the Hendra parish finance meetings for the past year, while St. Cecilia’s was administered by the Parish Priest at Hendra prior to the amalgamation of the two parishes. I have recently become a member of the Mother of Mercy Parish Pastoral Council.
I worked in our family owned transport business doing most of the office work and some administration. I commenced there in 1973 and retired in 2005.
I am a member of the Parish Finance Council and have been in the Parish for 37 years. I have been collecting and counting parish monies for 36 of those years. For many years, I was involved with the St Vincent de Paul Society in Brisbane.
Married to Kate, and we have 3 adult children (Abby, Angus, and Mary), and 2 grandsons (Henry and George). We have been members of the OLHC Parish since 2012, after we returned from Sydney. We were previously members of St Flannan’s Parish, Zillmere, for the previous 20 years. Both Kate and I serve in Eucharistic and Hospitality Ministries, and I recently joined the Parish Finance Council.
My name is Duncan Maitland and I am very new to the Parish as I am Acting Principal at Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Primary School for 2017. I am married to Maree and have 4 children, Will, Lucas, Ava and Hugo. I was previously an active member and reader at Holy Cross Parish Redcliffe. I am very much enjoying the welcoming culture of our new Mother of Mercy parish and look forward to contributing into the future.
